1. Animal Adventures: Discussing children’s favourite animals, their preferred environments, and animal characteristics in French. For the little ones, concentrate on simple vocabulary and basic sentences: ‘My favourite animal is a lion. Lions live in Africa. Lions are kings of the jungle and fast runners.’ For older children, cover more complex descriptions, and how animals act: ‘My favourite animal is a dolphin. Dolphins are mammals, fundamentally similar to humans in many ways; they are beautiful and friendly creatures that work in harmony with other dolphins. They can swim at incredible speeds, communicate with musical sounds, and help injured or sick people.

2. My Family and Friends: Getting children to talk about their family members, friends and the things they like to do together in French. Preschoolers can practise naming members of the family and describing their relationships, while older children can discuss hobbies and interests.

3. Travel and Exploration: Brainstorming about a planned trip to a French-speaking country or city, describing the different landmarks visited and food and cultural activities in French. Younger children can explore basic travel vocabulary and phrases, whereas older children can create itineraries and debate what conversations they might have with people from that country.

4. Sports and Games: Talking about sports, games or other outdoor activities in French. Younger children can learn enough sports vocabulary to describe their favourite activities. Older children can discuss rules, strategies, and their experiences with sports or games.

5. Art and Creativity: The French experience of art in general, the history of particular French artists, famous paintings or exhibitions, or various activities on art or creativity. Children will learn colours, drawing techniques, and the basic vocabulary of art (be aware of the difference between mise en page and page de mise – they sound the same but are totally different!). Older children might also discuss technique, periods in art history, and the merits of particular artworks.
